How long is a JET Program contract?

Last checked: 2026-11-06

A JET contract lasts about 12 months, and it can be renewed one year at a time. The usual limit is three years. Participants rated as outstanding can stay up to five. Renewal needs agreement from you and your contracting organisation, so it is not automatic.

Renewal mistakes to avoid

What if you leave early?

SituationEffect, per JET Program USA
You finish in good standingYour return flight is provided if you are not seeking other work in Japan and leave within one month of the contract end.
You leave without due reasonYou may have to repay costs. This includes travel to Japan and other expenses your organisation paid.
You break the termsYou pay your own way home.
You take other work while on JETThis could end your contract and lead to deportation.

The rule is worded differently in two sources. The 2027 guidelines say you must not take a further contract with your organisation or a third party in Japan within one month. JET Program USA says you must not be seeking third-party work. If you plan to stay in Japan, ask before you accept anything.

Your pay is also reduced in proportion if you work less than a full year, and unpaid resident tax may fall due when you leave.

Where sources differ

Figures apply to the 2027 application year. Years 4 and 5 are only for participants the contracting organisation considers particularly outstanding.

How we checked: on November 6, 2026 we read the 2027 guidelines, CLAIR's 2026-27 handbook and JET Program USA's contract page directly, and all list the same pay. The JET Programme FAQ was not available that day. This page is general information, not legal advice.
