What is the JET Program application timeline?

JET applications open in the fall, interviews run in winter, results arrive in spring and most people leave for Japan in July or August. In the US, the 2027 deadline is November 13, 2026 at 11:59pm Hawaii time. Other countries set their own dates.

The 2027 timeline in the US

About 97 to 98 percent of participants go as Main Arrivals, the US page says. A few leave earlier: April 10, 2027 for CIRs and May 22, 2027 for ALTs. Early applicants must ask for this on the application, and need their degree by the end of January 2027.

How dates differ by country

Do not assume another country's date applies to you. These are the deadlines we saw for the 2027 intake.

The rhythm is similar elsewhere. In Australia's 2026 intake, Melbourne's page gave a closing date of November 7, 2025, interview notices in late December, interviews in late January and early February, and results on April 7, 2026. The same page now says applications for 2027 are closed.

Plan backward from the deadline

This is our own suggested order. The steps are from the US application FAQ, and the timing is our advice, not an official rule.

Six or more weeks before: ask two referees. They must be academic or professional, not personal. Their letters go through the portal.
Five weeks before: order official transcripts from every school after high school.
Four weeks before: draft your statement of purpose. It can be no more than two pages.
Three weeks before: if you have not graduated, ask for proof of expected graduation on university letterhead.
Two weeks before: complete the Self-Report of Medical Conditions and copy your proof of citizenship.
One week before: pick your interview location with care, then submit.

Common mistakes

Missing the deadline. The US page says it is final, and incomplete applications are removed.
Writing past two pages. Anything past the second page of the statement is not reviewed.
Sending unofficial records. Unofficial transcripts and portal screenshots are not accepted.
Using the wrong citizenship proof. A Social Security card does not count.
Choosing a location in a hurry. You cannot change your interview location after you submit.
Applying for both jobs. You can apply for one position only. See CIR vs ALT.
Booking life plans too early. An offer can be short-list or alternate. Alternates may be upgraded as late as December, so they may have less time to prepare.

After the result

A short-listed candidate who drops out cannot reapply for one year. An alternate may be invited if a place opens. Someone not selected may reapply the next year. Check the requirements first, and set money aside for start-up costs. If you are invited to interview, see what official pages say about it.

How we checked: JET Program USA pages, the Singapore, Melbourne, Toronto and Ireland pages and the India guidelines were opened directly on November 6, 2026. India's October 30 date comes from search text, because the embassy page we opened shows no deadline. Confirm your date with your own embassy. The 2028 dates are not set. JET Program USA gives only a rough plan of September to November 2027 for applications.
