What will a JET Program interview ask?
Last checked: 2026-11-06
We found no official list of JET interview questions, so treat any list online as someone's memory. Official pages do give the format, and it differs by country. CIR interviews test your Japanese. In the Philippines, ALT applicants bring a lesson plan and give a 10-minute teaching demonstration.
The format, by country
| Where | What the official page says |
|---|---|
| United States, 2027 | Interviews are virtual, from home or abroad. They run in late January 2027. Notices typically go out in early January, from the coordinator at your interview location. |
| Denver, US | You are interviewed once, and there are not multiple interview phases. CIRs have a Japanese assessment. The consulate calls it a professional interview for a professional job. |
| Ireland, 2027 | In person in Dublin, January to February 2027. CIR interviews are in Japanese and English. |
| UK | CIRs have their Japanese assessed at interview, and may be considered as an ALT if it does not meet the requirement. |
| Philippines, 2026 FAQ | ALTs submit a lesson plan on any English topic and prepare a 10-minute demonstration from it. CIR interviews are in Japanese. Dates cannot be changed. |
| New Zealand, 2027 | The second stage is interviews, from the end of January to early February 2027. |
Do not assume another country's format applies to you. The Denver consulate says that actual interviews follow the same guidelines, but that specific details can differ by location. Ask your own office.
How competitive is it?
JET Program USA says several thousand applications arrive each year, and about half are invited to interview. Only the top candidates are then selected. It gives no acceptance rate, and we could not find an official one.
What selectors say they want
The closest thing to an official brief is the eligibility text and the essay guidance.
| Source | What it asks for |
|---|---|
| All applicants, 2027 guidelines | Interest in Japan, motivation for international exchange in the community, an effort to study Japanese, willingness to adapt, and determination to finish your term |
| ALT, 2027 guidelines | Interest in Japan's education system, especially foreign language education, and a willingness to work proactively with children |
| Extra consideration, 2027 guidelines | Language teaching experience or qualifications, general teaching experience or qualifications, and a high level of Japanese |
| Essay, Philippines 2026 FAQ | Why you want to take part, why ALT or CIR, what you can contribute, and how your attributes, skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications will ensure success |

Practice prompts
We wrote these from the table above. They are for practice. They are not real interview questions, and no official source says you will be asked them.
- Why do you want to join JET, and why now?
- Why this position, and not the other one?
- What can you bring to a Japanese school or town office?
- What have you done to study Japanese, and what will you do next?
- How would you handle a placement far from where you hoped? The guidelines say there is no guarantee of placement near your desired location.
- Can you commit to the full term?
- ALT: how would you work with a Japanese teacher who leads the class?
- ALT: what simple activity could you run with children?
Before the day
- Reread your essay. It is part of your application, so make sure your answers fit it. The Philippines FAQ says essays are checked for plagiarism and AI-generated content, so write your own.
- Watch your inbox. Denver says some candidates miss key information because of spam filters.
- Check your documents. In New Zealand, applicants with a criminal history must submit their record at the interview at the latest. Ask your office what applies to you.
- CIR applicants: Denver suggests kanji review, Japanese newspapers and practice JLPT tests.
- Weigh online advice. Denver says some sites may not be accurate, and that no official JET site exists to help you prepare.
After the interview, see the application timeline for results, and budget early with the start-up costs.
How we checked: we read these embassy, consulate and JET Program USA pages directly on November 6, 2026. The Philippines FAQ is for the 2026 intake, and the Denver page has no date. The JET Programme website showed a maintenance notice that day. We have no first-hand knowledge of any interview.
